CBS AXES FRESHMAN COMEDY 'DMV' AND SOPHOMORE DRAMA
'WATSON' IN PRIMETIME SHAKEUP
CBS has officially confirmed the cancellation
of the freshman workplace sitcom DMV and the sophomore medical
drama Watson as of March 27, 2026. The network made the decision
to end both scripted series following disappointing ratings and a
strategic pivot toward new programming for the 2026-27 television season.
- Final
series finale dates are now set. Watson, which stars
Morris Chestnut as a modern-day Dr. John Watson, will air its final
episode on May 3. DMV—featuring SNL alumni Tim
Meadows and Molly Kearney—is scheduled to wrap its single-season run on May
11.
- Low
viewership and poor retention drove the decision. Despite a pilot that
reportedly tested exceptionally well, DMV struggled with
declining delayed multi-platform viewing and became one of the network’s least-watched
scripted programs. Meanwhile, Watson failed to find a
stable audience after a mid-season move to Monday nights.
- New
pilots are poised to take over. The cancellations signal high
executive confidence in two incoming comedy pilots: the single-camera
vampire comedy Eternally Yours and the historical multi-cam
sitcom Tillbrooks. This move indicates a shift toward a franchise-heavy
lineup that includes successful recent renewals like the Yellowstone
spinoff Marshals.
Industry analysts and fans are now awaiting the CBS
upfront presentation on April 15, where the full 2026-27 schedule will be
finalized. We will continue to monitor the network for official series orders
for the incoming fall slate.
